Caring instructions

Before you wash any knitted or crocheted item, take a look at the caring instructions. You´ll find the symbols both on the ballband of the yarnball and online on our website in the specifications of each yarn.

General information

Knit wool garments which are made from a yarn which was labelled “machine washable” can be washed by machine, at the delicates setting. All other wool garments must be washed by hand or dry cleaned.

Before washing, make sure that the garment is turned wrong side out. This protects the outer side of the garment from too much abrasion. In addition, you much always select the correct temperature.

Machine washing

When washing wool garments by machine, you must always use a mild detergent which is specially formulated for wool! Under no circumstances should softener or a detergent containing bleach, essential oils or similar be used because these can damage the yarn and lead to felting and loss of color. Such products also cause cardigans and pullovers to lose their resilience.

It is also important that you wash at the temperature stipulated on the wrapper of the yarn ball. Some yarns, such as cotton yarns for example, may bleed color when washed at too low a temperature. Wool, on the other hand, might shrink when it is washed at too high a temperature.

Hand washing

When washing a knit garment by hand, it is best to use a mild wool detergent or shampoo with no additives. Make sure that the detergent is entirely dissolved before you lay the garment in the water. Also, for hand washing, make sure that the water is at the temperature which is given on the yarn wrapper. Do not use too much pressure or rubbing because this could lead to the felting of the wool.

A wool garment should never be wrung out. Just lay the wet garment on a terry cloth towel, carefully pull it to shape, and leave it lying flat until it is dry. Alternatively, the garment can be carefully rolled in a terry cloth towel, to press out much of the moisture, but this should also never be wrung. Never hang the wet garment on a clothes hanger to dry! The additional weight of the water would cause the garment to stretch and lose its resilience. Knit garments should always be dried flat, for example lying on a towel or drying rack. This is especially important for Merino wool garments, which tend to get bigger after washing.

What is the best way to remove spots?

Spots on wool garments should be carefully washed out, preferably with cold water, to which a small amount of potato starch and a few drops of vinegar have been added.

What is important when ironing?

Wool garments should be turned inside out then be only lightly steamed, without touching the garment with the iron.

However often, this is not even necessary. Hang a wool garment outdoors overnight or hang it in the bathroom while you are taking a hot shower. The humidity in the air causes any wrinkles to disappear on their own.

How can I get rid of the small nubs which sometimes appear on wool garments?

The appearance of such small nubs is called pilling. Pilling occurs when the garment is abraded. It appears on areas, such as the inner side of the sleeve, which experience more rubbing. Special pilling removers are available to for purchase.
